Blackcurrants make Korean TV

Catalyst applied our food expertise to a unique project when a Korean television crew landed in New Zealand at short notice to make a programme about blackcurrants.

Catalyst director Jane Lancaster, who also happens to be a blackcurrant grower, assisted the industry body, Blackcurrants NZ Inc, to put a programme together that showcased the best of NZ blackcurrants for a Korean audience.

The programme was made for a Korean lifestyle channel and had a strong focus on health, nutrition and cooking.

Koreans are very health conscious when it comes to food and blackcurrants have high levels of vitamin C and anti-oxidants, as well as being low in sugar and a good source of fibre. The TV crew was also interested in food traditions, as this is a big part of Korean culture, and wanted to film a family of third generation growers.

Catalyst was asked to be involved because of our expertise in food and health.

“We’re creative, we know the industry and we understand the health and food interface,” Jane says.

With a project like this, you have to accept you have no control over what the end product will look like, so it was extremely important for the industry to present a professional image when talking about food and health. Catalyst helped to ensure a credible position was put across.

“We have respect for the legislation as well as being able to portray products in a good light, in a creative way.”

Jane’s role involved working with the Korean team to put the programme together, accessing products to ensure that all the products in the industry were available to the crew to film, and organising a cooking demonstration with a chef in Christchurch. He cooked all new recipes highlighting blackcurrants, especially for the occasion.

All this was organised in a matter of days, so it was a great result at short notice.

The Korean film crew tracked down Blackcurrants NZ Inc via the internet – which just goes to show the opportunities that are out there in our overseas markets. Technology enables anyone to connect, so you never know what chances might be coming your way.
