How can your business benefit from the circular economy?

The circular economy philosophy resonates perfectly with the Catalyst Ltd strapline “Creating more from less” and we are now offering services that seek to foster this successful model. Presenting our new circular economy canvas at the Sustainable Business Network conference was a great opportunity to spread the word further.

Who participated?

After the Sustainable Business Network introduction on what the circular economy is and its global momentum, we heard an example quoting the IKEA CEO, who had explained in a speech the ‘peak of stuff’ - that customer demand will plateau, allowing an opportunity for the circular economy to come into action.

The EU plans to invest 6 billion euros in developing a circular economy and Scotland, which is on a similar scale to NZ, will invest 70 million pounds in manufacturing for a circular economy.

Four speakers from diverse businesses told their stories and identified key success factors of the process. They were:

Catalyst and our partners at thinkstep presented our new circular economy canvas and facilitated a workshop to help attendees understand different aspects of circular economy relevant to their specific activities. This included:

  • Understanding environmental impacts over the full life cycle of their product/service
  • Generating ideas that will address those impacts
  • Identifying barriers to set these ideas up
  • Identifying infrastructures needed and stakeholders to be approached

What are the outcomes?

SBN presented the outcomes in a short video:

They can be summarised in five key takeaway messages:

  • Design is key
  • Switch from product to service
  • Embrace technology
  • Identify environmental impacts (use tools like LCA or EPD)
  • Work across the value chain

The full summary can be found here.

Catalyst capabilities

Catalyst was happy to participate in this successful event and we are keen to replicate it to spread the circular economy momentum across NZ and beyond.

Based on feedback from attendees, the freshly developed circular economy canvas (below) is comprehensive but easy to use. We are confident it will suit your needs if you wish to move toward a more circular economy.

We offer tailored workshops either at your place of work or somewhere outside of work. For many businesses, half the cost could be covered under the New Zealand Trade & Enterprise Capability Voucher Scheme, which we are registered with. If you’d like to learn more please get in touch with Ben
